How a Greenville Boutique Doubled Online Sales

Peach & Thread Boutique is a women's clothing store in Greenville, South Carolina. When they came to us, their entire online presence was an Instagram account. Good photos, loyal followers, a genuine community. But every sale required a DM conversation, a manual invoice, and a prayer that the customer would actually complete the purchase.

They were leaving money on the table. Here's how we fixed it.

The Problem: Instagram Is Not a Store

Instagram is great for discovery. It's terrible for transactions. Here's what Peach & Thread's sales process looked like before:

  1. Post a photo of a new arrival
  2. Customer DMs "Is this available in medium?"
  3. Owner responds (if she sees it — Instagram's algorithm buries DMs)
  4. Back-and-forth about sizing, color, price
  5. Send a PayPal or Venmo link
  6. Hope the customer follows through
  7. Manually track inventory in a spreadsheet

Between steps 2 and 6, they were losing 40-60% of interested buyers. People would DM at 10pm, not get a response until morning, and by then they'd moved on. Or they'd get distracted between the conversation and the payment link. Or they'd decide the process was too complicated and just browse somewhere else.

The owner was spending 3-4 hours a day managing DMs. That's time not spent buying inventory, merchandising the store, or — you know — living.

Why Not Shopify?

It's the obvious question. Shopify exists for exactly this situation. Here's why it wasn't the right fit:

Monthly fees add up. Shopify's Basic plan is $39/month. But a boutique needs apps: email marketing ($20/month), reviews ($15/month), size charts ($10/month), Instagram integration ($15/month). Suddenly you're at $100-$150/month. Over two years, that's $2,400-$3,600 — and you still don't own any of it.

You don't own your customers. On Shopify, your customer data lives in Shopify's ecosystem. Leave Shopify and you're exporting CSVs and hoping everything transfers cleanly. Your product URLs break. Your Google rankings reset. Your customer bookmarks go nowhere.

Every Shopify store looks like a Shopify store. For a boutique where brand identity is everything — the curated aesthetic, the personal touch — looking like every other Shopify store undermines the entire value proposition.

Transaction fees on top of payment processing. Shopify charges 2% on every sale unless you use Shopify Payments. Stripe charges 2.9% + 30 cents. On a custom site, you only pay Stripe.

What We Built

We built Peach & Thread a custom online store that matches their Instagram aesthetic and handles the entire purchase flow:

Product catalog with real-time inventory. Every item shows available sizes and colors. When something sells out, it updates immediately. No more "sorry, we just sold the last one" DMs.

Stripe checkout. Secure, one-page checkout. Apple Pay, Google Pay, credit cards. The customer never leaves the site. The owner gets paid instantly.

Product photography integration. The same photos they shoot for Instagram get uploaded to the store. One photo shoot, two channels. We built the upload flow to be fast — drag, drop, crop, publish.

AI sizing assistant. This is the piece that changed everything. We built a chat assistant that lives on every product page. It answers the question that kills more boutique sales than anything else: "Will this fit me?"

The assistant knows every product's measurements, fabric stretch, and fit notes. A customer can ask "I'm usually a size 8 at Anthropologie — what size should I get in this dress?" at 11pm on a Tuesday and get a helpful answer in seconds. No DMs. No waiting until morning.

It also handles questions like "Do you have this in blue?" and "When will you restock the linen pants?" — the repetitive questions that used to eat hours of the owner's day.

The Results

Within 90 days of launching the custom store:

  • Online sales doubled. Not because of more traffic — because the people who were already interested could actually buy without friction.
  • DM volume dropped 65%. The AI assistant handles sizing, availability, and basic product questions. The owner now spends DM time on genuine customer relationships, not transactional back-and-forth.
  • Average order value increased 22%. The product catalog shows "Complete the Look" suggestions. When someone buys a blouse, they see the skirt that goes with it. That didn't happen in DMs.
  • After-hours sales went from 0% to 35% of total. The store never closes. The AI assistant never sleeps. Turns out, a lot of Peach & Thread's customers like to shop at night after the kids are in bed.
  • Return rate dropped. Better sizing information upfront means fewer "this doesn't fit" returns.

What the Owner Says

The biggest change wasn't the revenue. It was the time. The owner went from spending half her workday managing DMs and manual invoices to spending that time on buying trips, in-store events, and actually enjoying the business she built.

She still posts on Instagram — it's still her best discovery channel. But now every post links to the product page. The customer taps, reads the details, asks the AI assistant if they need to, and buys. The whole thing takes two minutes instead of two days.

The Instagram-to-Website Pipeline

Here's what Peach & Thread's flow looks like now:

  1. Post a new arrival on Instagram
  2. Link in bio goes to the product page
  3. Customer reads sizing info, asks the AI assistant any questions
  4. Customer checks out with Stripe (Apple Pay, 30 seconds)
  5. Owner gets a notification and ships the order
  6. Customer gets a confirmation email with tracking

That's it. No DMs, no manual invoices, no spreadsheets.

The Numbers

The custom store cost a one-time build fee. Stripe takes 2.9% per transaction. No monthly platform fees, no app subscriptions, no transaction surcharges.

Compare that to 2+ years of Shopify plus apps, and the custom store pays for itself quickly — while giving Peach & Thread something Shopify never would: full ownership of their code, their customer data, and their brand.

Could This Work for Your Business?

If you're running a boutique, shop, or product business from Instagram DMs, you're working harder than you need to. A custom store that matches your brand, handles payments, and answers customer questions around the clock isn't science fiction. It's what we build.
